Fontana di Trevi Accessible Rome: Visitor Guide
The only official line on access: there are steps
The fountain’s official website says one thing about accessibility: there are steps down into the inner perimeter. That is all of it, in Italian and in English, with no mention of a ramp, a lift or another way in. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina describes the same way in, down the central staircase, and caps the area at around 400 people.
What no official page says is whether someone in a wheelchair can get down there: there is no statement either way, and we will not invent one. Nobody publishes the number of steps, the drop between the square and the basin, or the gradient in between; Turismo Roma’s page on the fountain has no accessibility section.
Where you go in and where you come out
- Ticket office and entrance gate: Via della Stamperia.
- Exit: the gate on Via dei Crociferi, on the far side. You do not leave the way you came in.
- Inside the perimeter there are no toilets and no cloakroom.
You may not sit on the rim of the basin, eat, drink or smoke, and no resting point is listed. Zetema staff are posted at the entrance, the exit and inside the monument, as described for the trial period to December 2025, but nothing official says whether they help wheelchair users or how to ask. No official source describes the paving of the square or the approach streets; what circulates on it comes from blogs.
Tickets, free admission and the document to bring
Since 2 February 2026 tourists and non-residents pay to enter the inner perimeter: 2 euros, charged between 9:00 and 22:00, the first Sunday of the month included. Admission is free for people with disabilities and one companion, on production of the entitling document at the ticket office; without it you pay, and the official text does not say which document is accepted. Those entitled skip the purchase queue and use the dedicated lane, though nothing documents whether that lane, or the route beyond it, can be taken in a wheelchair. Tickets bought ahead are open, with no timed slot, non-refundable and not changeable.
Opening hours
The gate is open 11:30 to 22:00 on Monday and Friday and 9:00 to 22:00 on the other days, last entry 21:00. On alternating Mondays it opens at 14:00 instead, and only fontanaditrevi.roma.it publishes the current list, so check your date against it; the 9:00 to 21:00 hours left from the reopening announcement no longer apply. From outside the fountain is free to see at any hour, and it stays visible to everyone after the 22:00 closing.
Barberini is the nearest metro and has no lift
The official site sends visitors to Barberini, five minutes’ walk, with no warning. In ATAC’s station-by-station table the Barberini row is empty: no lift, no stairlift to the platforms, nothing. Cavour on line B, given as about fifteen minutes away, has no lift either; access there is by a stairlift that works only when station staff are present, and ATAC lists Cavour among the stations where assistance should be booked, in the Laurentina direction; book it before you set off. Both times are the official site’s own, in minutes rather than metres and not measured for a wheelchair.
Every ATAC bus has a ramp and a dedicated wheelchair space, which is not the same as an accessible journey: ATAC does not state which stops near the fountain are usable, only that new and refurbished platforms are brought up to standard where technically feasible. The lines named by the official site are 118, 190F, 30, 46 and 60, stopping at Piazza Barberini and Piazza Venezia. ATAC’s table is dated 2023 and asks you to check the equipment before leaving.
Toilets
There are none in the fountain area, and Piazza di Trevi is not in the city’s official P.Stop list of public toilets. That list does not say which units have a wheelchair-accessible cubicle, so we cannot name the nearest one.
