Trastevere in a Wheelchair: Entrances, Lifts and Limits

Trastevere in a Wheelchair: Entrances, Lifts and Limits

Five places in Trastevere publish how a wheelchair gets in: the Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Villa Farnesina, the Galleria Corsini, the Orto Botanico and the Museo della Repubblica Romana. For the streets between them, for Santa Maria in Trastevere and Santa Cecilia, for the climb to the Gianicolo, no official source says anything.

Where you get in

  • Museo di Roma in Trastevere: eight steps at the main door, Piazza Sant’Egidio 1/b; the wheelchair entrance is at number 1 of the same square, a platform lift 80 cm wide, 104.5 by 118.5 cm, 300 kg.
  • Villa Farnesina, via della Lungara 230: in at the main entrance, the Loggia di Amore e Psiche, over a ramp.
  • Galleria Corsini: the Gallerie Nazionali declare an entrance free of architectural barriers, with a ramp and a panoramic lift to the first floor, but not where it is or how wide either is. Phone before you go.
  • Museo della Repubblica Romana, Porta San Pancrazio: in from Piazzale Aurelio, a short ramp into the atrium, four levels on the lift.

Neither lift at the Museo di Roma is for free use: the platform lift has to be asked for on 06 5897123 or at the desk, and the lift between the two floors, 80 cm door and 300 kg, is staff-operated too. Both floors are step-free, the accessible toilet on the ground floor. What must clear those 80 cm is the chair’s overall width with the wheels on, not the seat width: how to measure a wheelchair explains which number to take.

At Villa Farnesina the lift reaches the first floor, staff on request, but the accessible toilets are outside the villa building; it opens mornings only, closed Sunday except the second of the month. At the Galleria Corsini the rooms are all on one level. In the Orto Botanico every path can be taken in a wheelchair, the central avenue gravel and the rest paved; but the western sector is all slope, some 40 metres of height difference, and several areas are closed to wheelchairs, the greenhouses and the rose garden among them.

Entry is free for the disabled visitor and one companion at the Museo di Roma, Villa Farnesina (12 euro full price), the Galleria Corsini and the Orto Botanico (5 euro). At the Museo di Roma an exhibition with its own ticket desk can still charge 2 euro: 060608 will confirm. No source states which document a foreign visitor has to produce.

The churches publish nothing on access

On Santa Maria in Trastevere there is no official word: the parish website returns a PHP error on every page, checked 23 September 2026, and Turismo Roma lists no accessibility service. Steps at the door, a ramp, toilets: no source for any of it. Turismo Roma publishes the number 06 5814802. Santa Cecilia is the same, hours that Turismo Roma says can change, and nothing on access.

Arriving by train, bus or tram

Roma Trastevere station is the documented way in: platform 1 step-free on the level or by ramp, all six by lift, lifts from 05.00 to midnight, accessible toilets. Sala Blu assistance is booked in person or by phone up to 12 hours before the train, within Sala Blu hours. ATAC’s 2025 service charter puts a 350 kg ramp and a wheelchair space on 99.9% of buses, a level-entry low floor on 72% of its 134 trams, so the bus is better documented. Trams change at short notice, buses replacing the 3L and the 8 at night from 21 to 25 September 2026: check romamobilita.it.

Streets, slopes and toilets: what Rome has not published

Rome publishes no description of Trastevere’s paving and no assessment of how a wheelchair copes with it: neither the Piano Sanpietrini nor the Municipio I resurfacing programme names the rione. On gradients, the climb to the Gianicolo included, there is no official figure, and no list of accessible public toilets exists: the ones with a source are inside the museums and at the station, plus Villa Farnesina’s, outside the building.
