A self-propelled wheelchair has large rear wheels with handrims: whoever is sitting in it can move around on their own. A transit wheelchair has small wheels and needs a companion to push, but in exchange it is lighter and narrower, so it handles better in hotel corridors and inside museums. If you answer “I or a companion will push it” in the finder, both stay on the list: at that point the choice is between independence and bulk.

Not all of them, which is why cobblestones get a question of their own. That surface calls for wide wheels and a frame that doesn’t pass every jolt on to the person seated: answer “on Rome’s cobblestones” and only the models that cope well are left. Four-wheeled scooters and electric chairs generally give the best stability, though a few manual models manage perfectly well.

In central Rome this is the question that decides more than any other, because in many historic buildings the elevator barely holds two people. Most models go up to 110 or 120 kg. Between 120 and 140 kg you’re left with the bariatric wheelchair and the four-wheeled scooter, and one folding electric chair takes up to 150 kg.
