Basilica di San Pietro Disabled Access Rome Guide
Where you go in
Entry is free for everyone: no ticket, no certificate. The entrance for people with disabilities is the right-hand arm of the colonnade in St Peter’s Square, as you face the basilica: a ramp takes you up to the checks and inside. The site calls it a priority entrance and extends it to the person with you. It does not say whether it must be booked, or what document it asks for; the 74 per cent threshold applies to the paid services, not to the way in. The checks, run by the Italian State Police, are in that same arm, and the basilica names Wednesday, for the Papal Audience, and Sunday, with the midday Angelus, as its busiest.
Two other documented ways in, neither a substitute:
- Percorso Oranti, from Via di Porta Angelica: it enters through the Vatican Grottoes, and no official source says whether that way is free of steps. Ask accoglienza@fsp.va first.
- Vatican Necropolis: not accessible, steps in and out and uneven ancient paving.
What the official source says about the inside, and what it leaves out
The official wording is that the basilica is accessible by ramps and lifts. It does not say where the lifts are or what they connect, so no step-free route inside can be described from it. No gradient is published for the colonnade ramp or the square, and no source describes the paving of the last stretch. No accessible toilet is stated anywhere, in the basilica or the square, and the toilets the site does document, on the terrace at the foot of the dome, are not stated to be equipped. There is no cloakroom, no left luggage, only a pram area under the portico, and no wheelchair loan is documented: bring your own chair or rent one in Rome, delivered to your hotel.
The dome: the lift stops at the terrace and 320 steps remain
The climb is 551 steps. The lift saves 231 and leaves 320 on foot, from the inner gallery up to the outer one, so the top cannot be reached in a wheelchair; the lift reaches the terrace. A dome ticket bought online includes basilica entry, to be used 90 minutes before the dome time.
The 74 per cent certificate applies to the guided tours, not to the entrance
The guided tours are free at certified disability of 74 per cent or more, with one companion, and reduced for both below that. The certificate goes in with the online booking and is shown at the Portico Desk, and staff can refuse entry if it is not in order. The wording is not consistent, “equal to or greater than 74%” in the tour FAQ against “greater than 74%” on the Visits page, so at exactly 74 per cent settle it beforehand with accoglienza@fsp.va. No reduction is published for the dome or the Treasury Museum, and the museum, called barrier-free by the site, is closed for refitting. The basilica is open 7.00-20.00 from 1 June. For anything particular, write to accoglienza@fsp.va or call 06.69883462 or 06.69883731; neither handles tickets or bookings.
Metro and bus
The basilica names Ottaviano-San Pietro on line A as the nearest metro. Read ATAC’s table: on the Ottaviano-S.Pietro-Musei Vaticani row the Lifts and Escalators columns are marked as not available, Stairlift as available, and access is qualified as “in presenza di personale aziendale”, with staff present. You reach the platform on the stairlift, in your own chair or on its seat, booked at webapp.atac.roma.it/ServiziAccessibili, on 06.46954444 or at assistenza.prm@atac.roma.it, Sunday to Thursday 5.00-21.30 and Friday to Saturday to 23.30 where the extended service runs. Ottaviano has no station wheelchair of its own. Cipro, on the same line, reads as having lifts, but nobody publishes the walk from either station, so do not swap blind. All ATAC buses have a ramp and a wheelchair space, but no official source names the lines to the square. ATAC warns that the table ignores faults and works, and publishes station access in real time: when we looked, one access at Ottaviano and one at Cipro were closed.
