Galleria Borghese Wheelchair Access: Entrance and Lift
Where you get in: the back of the building
The step-free way in is at the back, Piazzale Scipione Borghese 5, and it reaches the sculpture floor, entirely visitable. The official English page says that entrance is there to avoid the flight of stairs at the front. The museum stands inside Villa Borghese park.
Ticket office, bookshop, cafe and toilets are not on that floor but on the services floor below, reached by a stairlift left of the external staircase at the front. Nothing published says whether that stairlift needs staff, must be requested ahead, or what it takes in load and platform size. The museum asks visitors to arrange the visit in advance with its accessibility office: ga-bor.accessibilita@cultura.gov.it, +39 06 6723 3753.
The Pinacoteca: you have to leave your own wheelchair
The lift up to the Pinacoteca has reduced capacity, because of the age of the building, and will not take large wheelchairs. The museum lends small chairs that fit it and keeps more comfortable ones upstairs. Going up means leaving your own wheelchair below and using the museum’s: a condition, not an option.
The size of those chairs and the maximum width the lift takes are not published, so you cannot check your own chair against them: the figure that decides it is overall width with the wheels on, not seat width (two different measurements). Nor is it stated whether the loan chairs must be booked, or whether staff help with the transfer. No official page says whether mobility scooters are allowed.
Free admission, the 2 euro booking and who counts as a companion
Booking is compulsory for every ticket and costs 2 euro. Free admission to state museums is set by the Ministry of Culture (DM 507/1997 and later amendments) for the disabled visitor and one family member, or a companion who can show they belong to health and social care services. The exemption from the 2 euro fee follows the same wording, so a friend or an informal carer is not covered: ask the accessibility office before you book.
The entitlement is proved at the ticket office with a document, not online, while the slot has to be booked in advance anyway, online or on +39 06 32810: a free ticket still needs a booked slot. There is no skip-the-line arrangement for anyone, entry being capped and admitted at the start of each hour, and nothing says whether the back gate gives priority.
Slots start every hour from 9.00 to 17.00, plus a shorter one at 17.45, 180 people at most. The visit lasts two hours, the 17.45 slot an hour and a quarter. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.00 to 19.00, last entry 17.45, closed 25 December and 1 January.
Getting there: metro, bus and the ATAC table
The museum’s directions send you to Barberini, Flaminio or Spagna on line A, then a bus. ATAC’s table:
- Barberini and Spagna: not accessible, no lifts or stairlifts down to the platforms. At Spagna the lift and stairlift serve only the Vicolo del Bottino entrance and the Trinita dei Monti exit.
- Flaminio – P.za del Popolo: accessible, but only when ATAC staff are in the station, and by stairlift, used seated in your own wheelchair. No station wheelchair there, and no accessible toilet listed.
The stairlift is booked through the ATAC web app, on 06 46954444 or by email, which is also how you learn if it is working: it runs only while staff are in the station, and line A has no remote-controlled lifts. The bus is steadier, the whole fleet having a ramp and a wheelchair space, and the nearest stop, Pinciana/Museo Borghese, is at the via Pinciana park entrance.
What no official source states
The toilets are on the services floor, but nowhere does the museum state that any of them is equipped for disabled visitors. No official source describes the surface of the last stretch from the via Pinciana entrance to the building, how long it is, or the gradients on it, and we will not estimate it for you.
We deliver rental wheelchairs to hotels in Rome, and the rest of this guide covers the other monuments the same way.
Accessible door-to-door transfer
We take you to and from the monument with no changes, with an equipped vehicle and dedicated staff: convenient from stations, airports and the port of Civitavecchia.
