For some time, in the curative field, which has been from your doctor, or on the web on several blogs in the sector you probably happened to hear about or read about the magnetotherapy and his benefits.
We have been talking about it for several years now, and that operators in the sector successfully use and prescribe this therapeutic technology to their patients, among other things on the net you can really find everything about treatments with magnetotherapy, even if at times you can run into several articles on the subject that do not always report the same point of view and therefore the same information. While some blogs publish information that praises multiple qualities, other pages write about magnetotherapy, almost wanting to promise “miraculous” cures.
In this short article we will try to shed some light on the subject, focusing on the when to treat yourself with magnetotherapy, what are the real benefits, any side effects of magnetotherapy and what are the contraindications to which we can meet. Finally, we will see how to choose the right device for magnetotherapy for themselves, without spending prohibitive figures and having a tool at home that can always be useful.

What is magnetotherapy
As indicated by the name, magnetotherapy is a technique that uses magnetic fields to restore the cellular biochemical balance exclusively to therapeutic and curative purposes. More simply, every cell in our body has a certain electrical charge, which in case of trauma or disease, tends to decrease and becomes the cause of inflammation and pain. Apply in these cases Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields (hence the acronym CEMP of which you have heard about if you have informed yourself about it) re-establishes the correct cellular polarization and therefore the their correct functioning bio molecular. This may seem simple, but in reality it is always good to keep clear some concepts that are the basis of the success of a treatment.
When and how to use it
Whether it is in the field of rehabilitation, for example of a limb following an accident, or in the care of chronic localized diseases, it should certainly be pointed out that the treatment through magnetotherapy, like all the other therapies carried out through an electro-medical device, it must always be prescribed or recommended by a specialist doctor trained in the subject, which will be able to assess both the benefits and any risks to our health.
Being aware that it is really necessary to do cycles of magnetotherapy is fundamental. To recommend to oneself a type of therapy which we do not know the effects on ourselves, could lead to the same results as when taking a wrong drug over the counter. So, let's be careful because we could find ourselves in the situation of having invested time and money for something that has not led to any tangible benefit!
To perform magnetotherapy cycles in the best way, it is also good to inquire about the correct use of the device in our possession. The manufacturers of magnetic therapy devices (at least those of the best Italian brands) always insert a complete use and maintenance booklet of all the necessary information. Always read it carefully and if necessary, follow the rehabilitation protocol indicated by the manufacturer, or alternatively, contact the therapist from whom you are being treated or whoever rented the magnet therapy device to us.
Benefits of magnetotherapy
This is one of the most discussed topics on the subject, e we must reflect on what is expected from a cure with magnetotherapy. In general, the advice is to stick to the results brought by studies and scientific publications on magnetotherapy, shared by researchers from all over the world and from Ministry of Health, which is the body that certifies magnetic therapy devices according to the programs installed by the manufacturers. In other words, it means that if you are waiting for an example of treat insomnia with magnetotherapy, or any other pathology not officially recognized as treatable with magnetotherapy, you may find yourself in a position to waste time and money. So, even in this case the advice is always to contact a doctor or a professional in the sector to find out if the magneto therapy can do for us. If instead you already have a device for magneto therapy, and if this is certified by the Ministry of Health, you can definitely refer to the list of available programs and follow the instructions.
What is treated with magnetotherapy
Treatment with magnetotherapy favors the regeneration of tissues favoring at the same time the vascularization and thus significantly reducing recovery times, especially in cases where they struggle to reform. There are many applications in which magnetotherapy finds fertile ground, especially for what concerns the pathologies and rehabilitative therapies concerning the bone tissue, where this type of therapy is truly exceptional in results. It is no coincidence, in fact, that magnetotherapy finds extensive applications, for example in post-operative treatments hallux valgus surgery, or of knee surgery, or to the femur, just to name a few, but among the most common applications we find the treatment of distortions, fractures, reabsorption of the edema and also local inflammations more or less simple as epicondylitis.
As already mentioned, with magnetotherapy it is also possible to treat a series of chronic diseases such as for example tendinitis, arthrosis, arthritis e Osteoporosis, which often afflict older older people. The list of treatable pathologies is really long and can be found on this page.
Advantages of magnetotherapy
Although it is always advisable to do cycles of magnetotherapy on prescription or medical advice, it is undeniable that the advantages of using it are many and make magnetotherapy much more palatable than other "equivalent" therapies.
-
-
- magnetotherapy is a safe therapy
- it has no side effects for the body
- it does not poison the body as a medicinal anti-inflammatory would
- there are no physical discomfort during the treatment cycle (it does not cause pain or discomfort on the treated part)
- you can do it at home, without going to specialized centers, even at night while you sleep
- the home magnetic therapy devices are all portable
- in case of overdose there are no health risks

Difference between low and high frequency magnetotherapy
There are three types of magnetotherapy: static, to high frequency and low frequency. Because of the unsatisfactory results of static magnetotherapy, which in the past was immediately dazzled, we will focus on high and low frequency models, starting immediately by saying that both are of the type CEMP, or Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields. This term, very fashionable among therapists who prescribe home magnetic therapy, simply means that the emission of the magnetic field occurs at a certain frequency, more precisely in the order of 5-100 Hz for low frequency models, and in the order of several MegaHz for high frequency models. But what are the differences between the two models?
Although the name may be misleading, Low-frequency magnetic therapy devices can treat a wider spectrum of diseases and in a significantly shorter time, compared to high-frequency magnetic therapy devices. In fact, try to treat diseases on bone tissue like fractures of the femur o hip with a high frequency device could force us to make very long and ineffective therapies with recovery times that can even double compared to a low frequency.
The high frequency model behaves better with soft tissues like tendons and cartilages, but also in this case the performances, compared to a low frequency device, are not comparable. To get a more precise idea, consider that magnetotherapy, already on its own, it brings satisfactory results on the medium-long term. So, with a low-frequency device that will have to help you with a fracture of the femur, expect also 40-50 days of treatment (in this case the duration of the period depends on the size of the part to be treated).
So, why decide to buy a high frequency device?
Well definitely the purchase price, which could also be half compared to a low-frequency device. This is a very important aspect, because in case we find ourselves having to treat and control minor chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, arthritis or small local inflammations, a high frequency magnetotherapy can prove to be the ideal solution!
On the contrary, if you think of rent a device for magnetotherapy for a period of 25-40 days, always ask for a low-frequency model, in order to be able to do an effective therapy in a reasonable time, without risking long runs and salty accounts!
How much does a magnet therapy device cost?
Today the market offers a range of products for all requirements and all budgets. Leaving aside the models for physiotherapists and professionals, there are many manufacturers that offer home models very easy to use and with excellent performance for the home magnetotherapy. Read this article to know how to choose a device for magnetotherapy.
A high-frequency device can cost from 120 € simpler models to 200 € than the most complete and accessorized, while a model of low-frequency device can cost from 250 € basic models up to cost also 500 € for a double-channel model with high power.
Let's see what are the features that increase the purchase price:
-
-
- equipment of the second channel, or the possibility of connecting the second solenoid so that it can treat more than one part of the body at the same time (for the home models the second solenoid could be optional)
- number of stored programs: the most complete models can even contain 35 programs, thus allowing to work on many diseases
- maximum power output. The power of the magnetic field is measured in Gauss, and the higher this will be, the more we will be able to treat the diseases in depth. In addition, the most powerful appliances are also the longest-lived ones
- number and type of accessories supplied: a model with a single radiating band, will certainly be cheaper than another model with two radiating bands or an irradiating mat
- choose recent production products: manufacturers are obliged to update the software of the appliances to keep the certification of conformity valid, therefore buying a product of recent production allows you to take advantage of the latest rehabilitation protocols (many manufacturers also offer the updating, over time, of the installed software)
-
Ultimately, when you decide to buy a magnet therapy device, always pay attention to the model proposed by the seller: first of all make sure that this is a model certified by the Ministry of Health as a CE Medical Device and that has stored the appropriate programs for what you will need to take care of.
Based on the above, you should always specify if you want a low or high frequency device, because as we have seen this difference is fundamental for therapeutic purposes.
Magnetotherapy: contraindications
Many people wonder if treatments with magnetotherapy have contraindications or can be harmful to their health. Make cycles taking care of a pathology with Magnetotherapy is not an invasive treatment for the body, as the fields issued by the solenoid they are non-ionizing, i.e. they are limited to a bio-physical action on the cell membrane e they are not absorbed by internal organs or tissues (unlike, for example, X-rays, which instead are ionizing and therefore dangerous for health). However, in particular cases it is not recommended to use and it is a good idea to follow the warnings given in the user manual supplied with the appliance and in any case always use it under medical prescription. For example, the use of magnetotherapy is not recommended in cases of pregnancy and lactation, in cases of viral diseases, heart diseases and pacemaker wearers, in patients with juvenile diabetes, mycosis, in cases of hyperthyroidism, tumor diseases, in children and in wearers of magnetizable prostheses (even if these have been out of production for several decades now).

Hello, I haven't been magnetized since I suspected I was pregnant, but instead I was standing next to a magnet therapy machine at a distance of five feet for about 10 minutes while it worked. What risks does it entail? Can I be calm? I mentioned this to the doctor and he told me that from now on I would go to the other side of the room as a precaution ... thank you very much
Hello Mariam, the magnetic field generated by the solenoid remains limited within a few centimeters of the applicator, so unless you have directly benefited from the treatment, you can rest assured and fully enjoy your pregnancy! Sincerely
I suffer from cervical osteoarthritis and arthrosis in the shoulder What do you buy for me, a device based on frequency?

hello, I would like to know if there are any contraindications to magnetotherapy for biological heart valve carriers and previous atrial arrhythmias (currently not present, as resolved with surgery). Thanks
Hello Barbara, magnetotherapy should not be done in the presence of pacemakers. In his case there are no specific contraindications, but it is always advisable to do this first before the specialist who prescribed the cycle. Yours sincerely
Hello I would like to buy a magnetotherapy device as I suffer from multiple pathologies (painful herniated discs, arthrosis of the knees, wrists, etc.). Since about two years ago I underwent a hip replacement surgery with total MEDACTA prosthesis I can undergo to magnetoteapia? I would do it to limit the pain. I am currently undergoing TECAR therapy without problems thanks for a kind reply. Ivo Noldin.
Hello Ivo, I confirm that it is possible to do magnetotherapy even in the presence of prostheses. In your case, I recommend a device with a double applicator supplied so as to treat two areas at the same time, such as the I-TECH LaMagneto. You can view and buy the device at the following link. Good morning, magnetotherapy and nickel allergy are not directly related to each other.
good morning
following the fracture of the peroneal malleolus due to both bone and subcutaneous edema
I was prescribed the magneto therapy
question:
Is the widespread pain that I feel at the foot in the morning is a symptom that something is going on?
is it progress?
consider that I suffer from a lymphatic drainage slowed to the lower limbs regardless of the trauma reported to the ankle
thanks
Hello and sorry for the delay in replying. After several days of treatment it is possible to feel more intense heat in the treated area and this is a symptom that there is a healing process taking place. In your case, however, this is difficult to evaluate, so I advise you to consult a specialist as soon as possible. Sincerely
After two days of use (4 hours) the knee pain (prosthesis) seems to have increased.
It's normal?
Hello and sorry I'm late. No, it is not normal. I recommend that you go to a specialist and stop the therapy. Yours sincerely
Hi, I have bone edema in my right knee, the orthopedist recommended magnetic therapy and injections. Since I started magnotherapy at home for about a week. Considering 8 hours a day, I usually do it at night. My knee hurts when I walk... Is it normal, do I do too many hours of therapy?? Thank you
Hello, therapy may not be directly responsible for the pain you experience. There are people who tolerate magnetotherapy very little, so if it is the first time you have ever used it, talk to your orthopedist before proceeding. Yours sincerely
Hello, why can't it be done in case of cancer? My father has been doing magnetotherapy for a year and now he finds he has a tumor. Could magnetotherapy have accelerated tumor growth?
Hello, in the event of ongoing tumor processes, medical protocols strongly advise against the use of any type of electromedical, including magnetotherapy. I recommend that you stop the treatment and contact your doctor.
Good evening,
My wife has relapse candida that she is treating, I wanted to know if doing magnetotherapy can be harmful
Hello, please refer to the contraindications illustrated at the link below:

Yours sincerely
I had a heart attack in 2004 as a result of which I was operated on and I put the stents I can use magnetotherapy
thanks
Hi, talk to your doctor first, it depends on each case. For example, in the presence of a pacemaker, magnetotherapy cannot be prescribed. Yours sincerely
Good morning, is it normal for the magnetotherapy band to get warm during the treatment? I suffer from algodystrophy femoral condyle and the heat that emanates hurts me, and the knee becomes red and swollen again. during the treatment ?! Also at what distance from the knee is it still effective? Thank you
Hi, it is normal for the applicator to heat up a little, especially if you use small solenoids and high powers. In his case, however, I believe that the heat he perceives is not derived from this but from a hypersensitivity to the treatment. It is a rare condition but not too much. I personally got to know patients with the same problem. In your case it is advisable to stop treatment immediately and contact your doctor. Sincerely
Good evening,
My 12 year old son was prescribed magnetotherapy for a bone edema.
The boy is monorene, in which case does magnetotherapy have contraindications?
Good morning, no problem for the kidney, but given my age I would start with low doses, therefore sessions of maximum 2 or 3 hours a day. Best regards
Good morning
I was prescribed magnetic therapy by a physiatrist for a displaced fracture of the 5th metacarpal. Operation carried out with 1,4 mm K wire. The prescription was recommended to me because after about 50 days after removing the 1,4 mm K-wire, also carrying out physiotherapy and exercise at home, the hand and wrist are still a little stiff in movement, and the hand slightly swollen between the 4th and 5th metacarpal, basically I can't make a fist in my right hand. Magnetotherapy was prescribed to me for 4 hours a day for 10 days. After 5/6 days of magnetotherapy there does not seem to have been any benefit. What I would like to understand is whether magnetotherapy can be good for this type of fracture and more or less after when the benefits of magnetotherapy are felt.
thank you
Hello, ten days are certainly few to be called a cycle. The protocols for the formation of the callus suggest cycles of at least 30 or 40 days, with a daily application which in your case can be 3 or 4 hours. It is in no way possible to define how many days it will take, it depends on many factors including your sensitivity to the treatment. Sincerely
Good morning,
I would like to thank you very much if you can elucidate me.
I had a (rather intense) blunt trauma to the foot at the 5 metatarsal level, in June 2016, and unfortunately an intraspongious fracture was generated with bone edema, unfortunately not recognized by the X-ray at the time. Then over time I carried out 3 magnetic resonances and if the first showed bone edema, now we talk about shades of hyperintensity of signal to MRI or we say of bone edema as "circumscribed edematous suffering". Unfortunately, I feel pain especially when resting on the edge of the foot, and in recent years, I have done physiotherapy but never magnetotherapy, that is, after the laser and tecar trauma, then after 6 - 7 months from the laser and ultrasound trauma. The singular thing is that I did the aforementioned physiotherapies on the prescription of Orthopedists and Physiatrists who visited me, and I am perplexed that they never prescribed magnetotherapy, when it reverses telling my story both orally and online both several physiotherapists and very recently a physiatrist doctor , they recommended Magnetotherapy to me: “I advise you to do a lot of Magnetotherapy”, thus begins the response of a Physiotherapist.
So I'm asking: on the (cancellous) bone of the 5th metatarsal, can Magnetotherapy against bone edema really be useful? one of my perplexities (certainly profane) is the matter of time, let me explain: hasn't it been too long for Magnetotherapy to have some positive effect? finally - having never carried out this therapy - I wonder how do you "guess" (forgive the term) the type of device and suitable program or the right physical parameters to be adjusted on my case? that it would still be an edematous presence on the 5th metatarsal, which seems to be the cause of my pain while walking.
Finally: for how long, i.e. how many days and hours a day should I do it?
Thank you so much if you give me explanations on this!
I think it is harmful.
Hi, there are no side effects claimed by the studies carried out. However, there are particular physical conditions in which magnetotherapy treatments are not recommended. Yours sincerely
Good morning! I have the apparatus for magnetotherapy. I wanted to know if I can use it even if I have 9 titanium dental implants in my mouth.
Hello, I confirm that in your case magnetotherapy can still be used. Yours sincerely
I have the mechanical aortic valve replaced in 2007 can I do magnetotherapy?
Hello Fabrizia, why do you have to start magnetotherapy? Magnetotherapy is not recommended for pacemakers. Therefore, in your case, before starting the cycle of treatments, I advise you to contact a doctor first to first understand if this can do to your case by providing benefits. Yours sincerely
I have been operated on the hip (total prosthesis) can I do low-frequency magnetotherapy?
Hi Carlotta, if you refer to your prosthesis, yes, I confirm that you can do magnetotherapy even in the presence of a prosthesis. However, before proceeding, I advise you to consult with a specialist doctor to assess whether this type of treatment can really help you in your case. Sincerely
Hi! Can magnetotherapy be done to accelerate bone healing in the early stages when Kirschner wires are still present or are they a contraindication for magnetotherapy?
Elena
Hello Elena, if the surgeon who operated on recommended one or more cycles of magnetotherapy, you can also proceed directly post-operative. Yours sincerely
Hi, I suffered a slight facial paresis which deviated my upper lip to the left. up.
having a magnetotherapy device, I wonder if it can be useful to use it and, for how long.
Thanks and best regards.
Dear Agostino, I don't think that magnetic fields can help you, I don't seem to remember indications of this type. In any case, seek advice from a surgeon to evaluate the case. Best regards
